As if you needed further proof that summer is drawing to its unofficial Labor Day close, Hallmark wraps up its Summer Nights movie series with this offering starring Debbie Gibson as a former pop star who takes a job teaching music at her hometown high school. Love, happiness and student-teacher bonding result.


MTV Video Music Awards

Well no, MTV doesn’t show many videos anymore — but ABC doesn’t show many movies, either, and that doesn’t stop it from airing the Oscars. MTV holds on to the VMAs because they’ve been popular and attention-getting, and will no doubt be so again, thanks to nominees such as Beyonce, Adele and Drake and performers including Rihanna,  this year’s winner of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Were that not enough, Britney Spears is set to return  to promote her new album, Glory. Glory be.


The Night Of
HBO, Sunday, 9 ET/PT


Sunday offers the return of The Strain (FX, 10 ET/PT) and the end of Roadies (Showtime, 10 ET/PT). But if you love great dramas, the place to be is HBO for the concluding episode of the summer’s best series, The Night Of, which runs an extra-long 95 minutes.
