Report: Windows 10 Adding Blue Light Reduction Option

Redmond is testing a feature that automatically adjusts the color of your screen based on the time of day.

Microsoft Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Microsoft appears to be the latest tech giant joining the fight against the gadget blue light that keeps you awake at night.

The software giant yesterday released a new preview build of Windows 10, which contains references to a f.lux-like feature supposedly intended to limit exposure to blue light before bedtime and help you sleep better. Microsoft itself hasn’t made any announcements about this, but a Twitter user by the name of “Core” dug into build 14915 and spotted references to the so-called “BlueLightReduction” feature, as was first reported by WinBeta.

At this point, Microsoft is just testing the feature, but if it actually makes its way to Windows 10, you’ll likely be able to toggle it on from the Notification area of your PC or mobile device, according to WinBeta. From there, the feature will automatically adjust the color of your screen based on the time of day, and the location of your device, reducing blue light at night to help you sleep.

Microsoft isn’t the only company combating the night time blues. Amazon, Google, and Apple have all recently released features that automatically adjust a device’s display colors to the warmer end of the spectrum at night, filtering out the blue light that can suppress your body’s production of melatonin and cause sleep problems.

Windows users looking to limit night time blue light on their PC can already download the free f.lux app, which “makes the color of your computer’s display adapt to the time of day: warm at night and like sunlight during the day.”
