Summer concert season is drawing to a close, but Flume’s is just getting started.
The Australian DJ/producer (real name: Harley Streten, 24) has launched his nearly sold-out North American tour , which concludes at the Austin City Limits music festival in early October. Fresh off the release of his second album, Skin, the low-key dance wunderkind continues to cultivate a fervent young fan base stateside: selling more than 100,000 tickets to his shows in the first 24 hours on sale and peaking at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with Never Be Like You featuring Kai.
Flume caught up with USA TODAY from the road to chat about touring and his first top-40 hit:
Q: What’s one thing you miss most about Australia whenever you travel?
A: I always regret leaving home if I don’t get at least four or five surfs in the week before I leave. I try to be in the water as much as possible before leaving and it’s the one thing I miss massively. I’ve grown up by the beach all my life and I almost get anxiety if I haven’t been swimming for a couple weeks or a month. It kind of builds up, so I try and get out as much as possible.
Q: What do you usually keep with you backstage?
A: Well, we’ve kind of stepped up the backstage game. Currently, we have a ping-pong table on the truck, so wherever we go, there’s ping pong. We love playing, it’s been getting a lot of use. In the dressing room, we’ve just made it really Zen: low lighting, lots of candles, and fresh, healthy food.
