9 Shows You Should Binge Watch

Share.

The Americans, 12 Monkeys, Outlander, Black Sails and more shows you should make time for in the midst of Peak TV.

There’s so much great TV out there these days, you’re probably missing what could be your new favorite show, without even realizing it. So let IGN help you out, as we list nine current shows you should binge.

We’re skipping over the shows that are among the most obvious – We don’t think you need us to tell you to watch Game of Thrones and even a recent series like Stranger Things is probably very on your radar at this point. Below you’ll find a mixture of critical darlings, buzzed about series and a couple IGN writer favorites. We’re in the era of “Peak TV,” and we know you can’t watch everything, but these shows are worth your time!

Black Sails (Starz)

Black Sails

Let’s start off with Starz’s’ excellent pirate drama, Black Sails. Yes, it’s a series that got off to a slow start in its first season, but trust us, you want to stick with this one. Serving as a prequel of sorts to Treasure Island, it mixes together both fictional and real life pirates, and has evolved into an incredibly engrossing and cool series filled with great characters, surprising twists and some very impressive action scenes. With the final season coming in 2017, this is a great time to catch up.

You’re the Worst (FXX)

You’re the Worst might be a show about bad people, but it will only take a couple of episodes to completely fall in love with Gretchen, Jimmy, Lindsay and Edgar. The thirty-minute episodes stand on their own as great comedic stories, but you’ll have binged through six before you even realize a few hours have passed by. Gretchen and Jimmy’s love story constantly subverts rom com stereotypes, and showrunner Stephen Falk and his writing team keep things consistently hilarious with their zippy, biting dialogue. By the time the squad’s Sunday Funday adventure rolls around, you’ll be wanting to eat breakfast tacos and drink trash juice with these four unlikely heroes who prove that it’s OK to be the worst when you’re having as much fun as they are.

Rectify (SundanceTV)

Rectify’s fourth and final season premieres on Sundance October 26th, and with only 22 episodes so far, it’s a sublime and rewarding binge. Featuring stellar and fearless performances from Aden Young, Abigail Spencer, and Clayne Crawford, Rectify is the beautiful, sullen story of a man released from death row after 19 years and all the challenges involved with reacclimatizing to society and reuniting with family. It moves at a slower pace than most other modern shows, but its meditative and poetic quality make for a truly unique and moving tale of redemption and forgiveness.

Mr. Robot (USA)

ElliotMrRobot_1280

If, somehow, you’ve managed to avoid all the buzz surrounding USA’s addictive, homage-filled study of hacker paranoia then it’s imperative you get on board. We’re now halfway through the second season, so there’s still time to catch up before the curtain closes on this summer’s batch of episodes. Rami Malek and Christian Slater top-line this rabbit hole of a conspiracy story that features an isolated, off-kilter hacker who gets roped into a massive cyber attack on one of the largest multi-national conglomerates in the world. Mr. Robot looks and sounds like nothing else on TV, making for one hell of a manic marathon.

Available on: Amazon Prime, iTunes

Outlander (Starz)

Outlander

Time travel, Highlander politics, changing the future, and a healthy amount of sex – Starz’s fantasy drama Outlander is not for the faint of heart. But pulling together all those disparate parts makes a rich and compelling story of two people from different time periods drawn together by. Outlander has only aired two seasons and both offer a wide array of storytelling styles and adventures; there’s not much repeated here. Leads Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan and Tobias Menzies are immensely watchable and interesting performers, and showrunner Ron Moore offers his stylistic flair that fans came to love with Battlestar Galactica.

Available on: Starz, Amazon, iTunes

The Leftovers (HBO)

Damon Lindelof’s first series since Lost, HBO’s The Leftovers has a very different vibe from that hit show, centering on what life would be like in a world where 140 million people have vanished without explanation, leaving those left behind with a ton of pain and unanswered questions. Yes, this is a sad and heavy show, but it’s also a remarkably involving one, with its strong first season leading into a truly phenomenal second year, filled with bold storytelling choices and haunting and evocative moments. It too is heading into its final season (debuting in the spring of 2017), giving you time to catch up on the 20 episodes so far.

Master of None

Netflix has been releasing a ton of original series lately, but Master of None is a true standout. Parks and Recreation’s Aziz Ansari co-created and stars in this comedy, centered on a New York-based actor and his day-to-day life. While there are ongoing plotlines, Master of None stands out in the Netflix terrain by embracing single-episode storylines, most of which tackle a specific theme in a very funny, insightful manner.

Available on: Netflix

12 Monkeys (Syfy)

12 Monkeys - Season 1

Quickly overcoming the cynicism any TV show daring to adapt a beloved (and Oscar-nominated) movie would naturally face, 12 Monkeys has proven to be an incredibly clever and complex series and one of the best science fiction shows you’ll find these days. Fully embracing the possibilities of its time travel scenario, the series takes plenty of surprising turns, and never feels like it’s being dumbed down for the audience. The paradigm on the series keeps shifting, as do the alliances between the characters, as they travel from one era to another, attempting to save humanity.

The Americans (FX)

The-Americans

Last but certainly not least, is The Americans, which is simply one of the finest series going these days. From the start, this story about a seemingly normal 1980s suburban husband and wife, who are actually KGB spies, has been expertly told and amazingly acted, anchored by Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell’s fantastic performances. The Americans has only gotten better as its continued, with each season offering big story pay offs and character evolution, in a show where the consequences of the dangerous life these people are leading feel real and earned. If you aren’t watching this show yet, you’re missing out.
