The Magnificent Seven Character Videos & Poster

Famed Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa created a number of highly influential films. Among these were The Hidden Fortress, which was an inspiration for Star Wars, and Yojimbo, which was later remade into A Fistful of Dollars. But perhaps none of his films have been as well known or as beloved as Seven Samurai, which has been remade multiple times across many formats. Most noteworthy of these remakes was the 1960 film, The Magnificent Seven, which spawned several sequels and has a remake of its own hitting theaters in September.

While the reboot retains the Western genre and familiar setup to the original, the specific characters and circumstances seem to differ in this iteration. Hopefully, this will result in a unique entry from director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) to stand beside the original classic.

A new poster and set of character videos (see above and below) highlight the all new seven in this year’s iteration. Denzel Washington (The Equalizer) plays the bounty hunter and group leader, Sam Chisolm. Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) plays the gambler, Josh Farraday. Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil) plays the hunter, Jack Horne. Ethan Hawke (The Purge) plays sharpshooter, Goodnight Robicheaux. Byung-hun Lee (Terminator Genisys) plays the assassin, Billy Rocks. Martin Sensmeier (Lilin’s Brood) plays Comanche warrior, Red Harvest. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (Cake) plays the outlaw, Vasquez.

Whether or not the stories of each of these characters will factor significantly into the plot of the film remains to be seen, but like other iterations of the story, this group certainly is made up of some fantastic archetypes for fighting injustice. What’s certain is that Fuqua has drawn a terrific and diverse cast, with a group whose personalities should bounce off of each other nicely.

While The Magnificent Seven remake hasn’t generated the usual gaggle of pre-release Hollywood tentpole news, it’s nonetheless generated quite a bit of buzz amongst casual filmgoers, recently rounding out a survey of the most anticipated films of the fall. While Westerns typically have a hard time at the modern box office, both the director of this iteration, and its star-studded cast of long time favorites and up-and-comers is likely giving it a bump that others missed.
